Her father John Draper Witherspoon birthed her while a student at Tulane University medical school. John Draper Witherspoon served in the United States Army Reserve as a lieutenant. Her mother, Mary Elizabeth Witherspoon was a professor of nursing at Vanderbilt University and had a Ph.D. in pediatric nursing.
