The British rapper M.I.A. has declared Christianity as her religion, despite being born a Hindu in London to Sri Lankan Tamil parents.

In our world today, religion and faith have had a lot of influences on the lives of many people. In the stories of celebrities, it is so hard to declare one’s faith without having any setbacks. Because several people hate religion.

The story of M.I.A now is different and according to her, she doesn’t mind what her fans will say or think. She is so serious about her conversion from Hinduism to Christianity.

Who Is M.I.A?

M.I.A. (Mathangi Arulpragasam) is a British rapper, singer, record producer and activist. She was born in London on 18 July 1975.

She usually sings beautiful songs that relate to immigration, self identification and warfare happening in our world because she has been a refugee before. She, together with her parents got displaced by Sri Lanka’s civil war when she was a young girl.

M.I.A. became very popular in the 2000s with her music style but everything has changed since she became a follower of Jesus Christ in 2022.

Why M.I.A is now a Christian?

When having an interview with Zane Lowe on Apple Music 1, M.I.A. explained the reason why she has chosen to be a Christian henceforth. The secret is about a vision she had about Jesus Christ in 2017. Since then, her life has been transformed drastically:

“Since then, my head has been in a totally different place. Being a Tamil and being a Hindu, I was very comfortable that I’d arrived finding myself. Which is, I think, going to be weird for America to process.

“But I had a vision and I saw the vision of Jesus Christ. It’s very, creatively, it’s a very crazy thing because it turned my world upside down. Because everything I thought and believed was no longer the case.

“And I think that was maybe a sign that something major was going to happen in the world and that people were needing to be introduced to this concept. But I always found the concept of Christianity quite basic compared to…”

If she calls Christianity Basic, then it sounds more like saying carrying the yoke of Jesus is lighter compared to others. And here are the Bible verses in relation:

“Take my yoke on you and learn from me, because I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy to bear, and my load is not hard to carry.” ( Matthew 11:29 – 30)

“I am. I’m not going to lie. Then when I had this vision, it turned my world upside down. I kind of couldn’t let go of the Tamil side. I think that’s why 50 per cent of the record is sort of like that. Because I’m still me. That’s still my language. And those are still my tools to be able to create beats like that or a sound like that.

This is not the first time someone who doesn’t buy into the Christian belief system about Jesus Christ has converted. She has been very bold to make a quick switch to following Jesus. Because according to her interview she believes something bigger is yet to come to this world.

Taking into account by using the Bible, there is nothing bigger ahead of us than the second coming of Jesus Christ. He is coming to judge the world.

M.I.A is a 46-year-old lady as of 2022 and after following the Hindu religion for all these years, she believes, she has now found her true identity in Jesus and it’s the best choice that she will never joke with.

Finally, according to her —her new faith in Christ would reflect in her music career by showing Christian imageries. This may likely affect her career but her conversion and convictions are so strong that she isn’t bothered about how people will criticize or unfollow her.

“But I think the message was just to get to a peaceful place. Watch the space. The history is, even if it costs me my career, I won’t lie. I will tell the truth, and I will tell you what’s on my mind and my heart. If I’m coming back now saying Jesus is real, there’s a point. Basically all of my fans might turn against me.”

Currently, M.I.A. is having 1 million followers on Instagram. She is yet to launch her newest album called MATA and fans are waiting to see what the British rapper has in store for them this time around as she is a born-again Christian.
