The reason behind his change of name was because Mr. T realized that his family (blacks) was not given much respect by whites. They used to call his father a ‘boy”, brother a ‘boy’… And so in order to defy that racial attitude, he changed his name.

“I self-ordained myself Mr. T, so the first word out of everybody’s mouth is “Mr.”

He said, “As a Christian, when I saw other people lose their lives and lose their land and property … I felt that it would be a sin before God for me to continue wearing my gold. I felt it would be insensitive and disrespectful to the people who lost everything, so I stopped wearing my gold.”

“My mother raised me with God. We were poor financially, but we were rich spiritually… My mother never cursed at home; my father never cursed at home, my father didn’t drink. Even though we were poor, we would say a blessing over the table. So that’s who I am… I always say I’m one of the toughest mama’s boys you’re ever gonna meet.”

According to some of his interviews, Mr. T explained that his faith in the Christian religion has been met with a lot of challenges that contradict his beliefs and other Christian values.

For instance, he revealed why he refused to take a huge amount of money to do advertisements that contradict his Christian faith.

“They offered me almost a million dollars to do a beer commercial in Japan. I said, ‘I won’t do it.’ First, it was $700,000 and then they moved the price up. Why [did I turn it down]? Because of what I stand on.”

Mr. T has been very outspoken about his faith as a Christian. Not just that, he takes into practice what the Bible teaches.

Although he sees himself as an imperfect being —he is striving hard to make this world a better place by capitalizing on his celebrity status to lead more people to Christ Jesus. He said he loves to be a preacher of the gospel.
